HOW THE BRAIN WORKS: As part of the series "How the Brain Learns Best," Dr. Lou E. Whitaker, principal of Pope John Paul II Catholic School, will present "The Adolescent Brain: A Work In Progress" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the school, 4341 W Homosassa Trail. The program is free to parents of Pope John Paul II students and parishioners from the six supporting parishes. It is open to the general public for a fee of $10. Childcare is available. Call the school to reserve a spot at 746-2020. Handouts and refreshments provided.

SECO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Up to 12 high school seniors from Sumter Electric Cooperative's service territory will be chosen to receive $2,000 scholarships. To qualify, high school graduates must reside in a home served by SECO and be enrolled in an accredited college, university or vocational/technical school by the end of 2006.

Application forms are available from all SECO offices and at the guidance offices of area high schools. Deadline is March 24.

REALTORS SCHOLARSHIPS: The Florida Association of Realtors is offering a total of $41,000 in scholarship awards in its 2005-06 scholarship/essay contest. To enter, students are asked to write an essay of 500 words or fewer on "How does a Realtor professional benefit the community?" Application kits are available in school guidance offices or can be found at http://media.living.net Deadline is March 17.

ROWING CLUB: Rowing Organization of Citrus County Students will hold a free rowing clinic for middle and high school students from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Wallace Brooks Park. Participants must bring proof of a recent less than a year old sports physical or other medical exam. Current ROCCS members, rowers and coaches will be on hand to row and give instruction. MENTORS: Take Stock in Children seeks individuals interested in becoming a positive influence in a young person's life by becoming a mentor. Mentors meet one hour per week in a school-based setting at local Citrus County middle or high school. Take Stock in Children is a school-based youth mentoring program providing scholarships for qualified students from households that meet financial requirements.
