53-year-old charged with attempted sexual battery

TARPON SPRINGS - Willie J. Reed, 53, was arrested and charged with attempted sexual battery early Wednesday after being accused of attacking a 34-year-old woman at the Riverside Apartments.

Reed was waiting by a gate at the west entrance of the apartments near Beckett Way when the woman entered about 1 a.m., according to a Tarpon Springs Police Department arrest report. The woman told police he grabbed her from behind, ripped her shirt off and attempted to pull her into a darkened area.

He was groaning and mumbling and released her only after two passing cars stopped and she began to scream, the arrest report said. From the woman's description, police suspected that the attacker was a transient man whom officers had encountered earlier in the evening. After the woman identified Reed though a booking photograph, the police found him wandering the neighborhood and arrested him two hours later. Reed, who has many aliases and previous criminal convictions, is in the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
