For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
ST. PETERSBURG - The cool air created two different types of games in the Class 3A, District 9 girls semifinals. In the first, Clearwater Central Catholic had no trouble dealing with the low temperatures, blasting Tampa Catholic behind Ali Halverson's hat trick, 7-1.
In the second game, though, Saint Petersburg Catholic and Berkeley Prep played to a scoreless tie in regulation and in overtime. SPC sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Briggs' diving stop on eighth-grader Danielle Manning's low line drive in the penalty-kick round was the difference. The Barons beat the Buccaneers, advancing to the state playoffs and ending the season for last year's Class 2A semifinal participants. SPC meets CCC in the final on Friday night, a rematch of last year's district final which the Marauders won in double overtime.
Another factor for Berkeley Prep, though, was the absence of three key starters. Leading scorer Chelsea Hatcher, who has 21 goals and was the Hillsborough County player of the season in 2004-05, tore an ACL in the Jacksonville Episcopal tournament last weekend. The Bucs, who defeated SPC 2-1 in the regular season, also lost sweeper Caroline Campbell and forward Whitney Hang.
But, Berkeley kept the Barons at bay behind eighth-grader Amber Famiglietti. Famiglietti, who has started all season, controlled the ball at midfield and gave the Buccaneers plenty of opportunities to score in regulation. But, Briggs answered the call, making one key save after another.
In the shootout, each player from both teams scored until the Bucs' fifth shot, when Briggs saved Manning's shot.
In the first semifinal, Halverson scored her first goal one minute into the game and her second minutes later. The Marauders went into halftime with a 5-1 lead and coasted from there.
