  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Brian Moorhead, the Florida Orchestra's principal clarinetist, will be featured in this weekend's Masterworks series, performing Mozart's Clarinet Concerto.

The program opens with Busoni's Turandot Suite, followed by the concerto, and concludes with Respighi's famous symphonic poems Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome. At the podium will be a newcomer to the Florida Orchestra, Roberto Minczuk, the former associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic and principal guest conductor of the Sao Paulo State Orchestra in Brazil.

Florida Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Pasadena Community Church, 227 70th St. S, St. Petersburg; 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater; and 7:30 p.m. Monday, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa. $15.50-$50.50. Christian music from A to Z

The full spectrum of Christian music comes to Tampa this weekend in two events, one a rock-tinged show including motorcycle daredevils, geared to young audiences, and another filled with traditional music and homespun humor.

On Friday, at the USF Sun Dome, the Christian music acts include hip-hop artist tobyMac, rockers the Newsboys and female trio ZOEgirl, plus the Sphere of Fear motorcycle stunt show. Doors open at 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $10 at the door. The Sun Dome is at 4202 E Fowler Ave.; (813) 974-3002.

On Saturday at the St. Pete Times Forum, the Bill Gaither Homecoming show features traditional music by Gaither and his traveling band. Gaither and his wife, Gloria, have been writing songs for more than 40 years. Among their most famous are Because He Lives and He Touched Me, featured in hymnals of many denominations. The Gaither Homecoming Tour begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive. $18-$48. (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100 or (813) 301-2500.

An evening with Susan Tedeschi

Susan Tedeschi is known for her sizzling guitar work as well as her smoky voice, a combination that has won her acclaim from blues aficionados and a wider fan base too. How many other blues artists have been nominated for a Grammy Award (for best new artist a few years back) alongside the likes of Christina Aguilera, Macy Gray, Kid Rock and Britney Spears?

But her latest CD, Hope and Desire, features guitar whizzes Doyle Bramhall II and Derek Trucks (who happens to be Tedeschi's husband).

"I had to wait until I'd given birth to start the record," Tedeschi tells Guitar Player magazine in the current issue, "and that limited the amount of time I had to prepare. So I decided to sing with the band first, and then put my guitar on later. But, when we got to that point, I thought the songs sounded great without it. I don't like cluttered guitars. I like guitars that have purpose, and I thought Doyle's and Derek's parts were really nice. In the end, I wasn't disappointed - especially as I'll have to play their parts live when we tour the album."

That is exactly what she'll be doing Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa. $25.50-$28.50. (813) 229-7827.
