Top five movies and upcoming releases

By STEVE PERSALL
Published January 19, 2006

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. Match Point - Remember when it wasn't surprising if Woody Allen made the best movie of the year? This decidedly unfunny homage to Alfred Hitchcock ends the slump.

2. Brokeback Mountain - Tough cowboys also need love, even from other tough cowboys. One of 2005's best films, winner of four Golden Globes and a leading contender for Academy Awards.

3. Capote - Philip Seymour Hoffman picked up a Golden Globe playing author Truman Capote as he researches and writes In Cold Blood.

4. King Kong - Golden Globe nominee Peter Jackson follows his Lord of the Rings trilogy the only way possible: remaking a screen classic with respect and relentless brilliance.

5. The Family Stone - A fine ensemble cast and smart screenwriting by director Thomas Bezucha turn sitcom situations into the feel-good weeper of the season.
