Cattleman sues district, says ram injured him

PLANT CITY - Polk County cattleman Jay Mueller filed a lawsuit this month against the Hillsborough School District after he said a ram kept on Durant High School's campus injured him.

The incident happened last February when Mueller visited Durant to inspect cattle he hoped to buy from an agricultural teacher, according to a lawsuit filed in Hillsborough Circuit Court.

After the ram struck Mueller, his knee hit a feeding trough, the lawsuit said. A tendon tore in his knee, requiring surgery that left him with an eight-inch scar, said Mueller's lawyer, E. Blake Paul.

Mueller hasn't been able to put pressure on the knee for months, his lawyer said.

The lawsuit also states that the ram attacked teachers and other students, though none of the alleged incidents are detailed in the complaint.

Mueller's wife, Tara, also is seeking compensation from the school district for her loss of her husband's "care" and "attention" since the incident.

A school district spokesman said he could not comment on the lawsuit.
