Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Success in a career doesn't necessarily carry into retirement.

That's why the Sun City Center's Coalition for Mental Health and Aging will hold a forum Tuesday titled, "Coping Skills that Build a Successful Retirement."

The forum will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Creason Hall at the United Methodist Church, 1210 W Del Webb Blvd.

The event will be a chance for retirees to hear guest speakers and ask questions on everything from how to transition from the work world into retirement to handling a caregiver's role.

The first topic will be: "New Growth and Self-Insights that Come with the Caregiver's Role."

The featured speaker for this session is Eileen Poiley, director of education at the Suncoast Alzheimer's and Gerontology Center at the University of South Florida.

The second session is titled "Adopting Preventive Health Care Measures, Along with Taking Control Over Your Health Care Decisions."

This session will be lead by speaker Cindy Hardy, the assistant community health director for the Hillsborough County Health Department.

Before the final two sessions, light refreshments will be served in small groups.

The third session is titled "Being Aware of the Pitfalls During Retirement: Developing a Healthy Coping Strategy" and will be led by speaker Kay McAuliffe with Mental Health Care Inc. of Tampa.

The final session, called "Healthy Aging and the Positive Sides of Retirement Living," will feature speaker Richard Smith, also with Mental Health Care Inc.

The speakers will take questions from the audience.

"We're going to be dealing with care giving, preventive health measures, some of the pitfalls during retirement, and talk about the positive side of retirement living," said Dr. Ken Barringer, the forum coordinator and chairman of the coalition.

"The emphasis will be on the positive approach," he said.
