Community theaters top weekend's list

The curtain will rise on a play about two fading Broadway stars, and a show featuring the music of Irving Berlin continues.

Two community theater offerings provide the best weekend entertainment options.

This is the opening weekend of Legends at the Arts Center Theatre on the grounds of the Citrus County Art League, 2644 N Annapolis Ave., Citrus Hills. The 200-seat theater is completing its second season, and the seating, acoustics and sight lines are excellent.

As for the play, Legends is about two fading Broadway stars, each forced to work with the other for a paycheck. The two female stars, Sylvia Glenn (Jaret Luboweicki) and Beatrice Monsee (Carole Keller), team up and try, without much success, to get along nicely for the sake of the show. Boom Boom, a male exotic dancer, (played by Freedom) and Jesse Timmons playing an unnamed, star-struck cop flesh out the cast.

Legends will be performed weekends through Feb. 5 at the Arts Center Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. There is an additional matinee at 2 p.m. Jan. 29. Admission is $15, and box office hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The Melody Lingers On, the Music of Irving Berlin continues this weekend at Playhouse 19, 865 U.S. 19 Crystal River. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students with IDs. Call the box office for reservations or more information at 563-1333.

In case you want to venture outdoors, check out the 26th annual Brooksville Raid Festival, which takes place today and Sunday at the Sand Hill Scout Reservation on State Road 50 east of Weeki Wachee. Events include Civil War reenactments each day, plus a Victorian-era tea party, a gala ball, a Civil War-era baseball game, vendors and demonstrations. Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for ages 6-12. Children ages 11 and younger and Boy Scouts in uniform are admitted free. Call (352) 799-0129 for information.
