Navy sailor convicted of beating woman

Associated Press
Published January 22, 2006

PENSACOLA - A Navy sailor from California has been convicted of beating and sexually assaulting a woman outside a Florida nightclub.

A jury on Friday found Keona Shawn Berg, 23, guilty of felony battery and attempted sexual battery in the Feb. 20 attack in Pensacola.

Berg of Chula Vista, Calif., was a petty officer third class stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, based in San Diego.

Navy officials were unable to confirm his status Saturday.

Berg had just finished a weeklong class at Pensacola Naval Air Station when the attack occurred hours before he was set to return to California. He was detained in San Diego in early March.

The victim, who is not being identified because of the nature of the charges, sobbed quietly as the verdict was read. She testified Thursday that she suffered a concussion, fractures of the nose and around the eyes, facial nerve damage, memory loss and cuts to the forehead and lips during the attack.

Berg faces up to 20 years in prison upon sentencing, which is set for Feb. 22.
