100-year birthdays

Charles Vincent Tese was born Jan. 30, 1906, in Italy, the son of Salvatore and Biovanella (Gallo) Tese. He emigrated to the United States in 1910.

Armed with a grammar school education, Tese enlisted in the Army on Oct. 3, 1942, at Fort Jay, Governors Island, N.Y. A single man, small in stature - 5 feet tall, 128 pounds - he served until Sept. 24, 1945, and was awarded both the Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal.

After his military service, Tese opened an upholstery school in New York City and taught members of the armed services. In about 1968, Tese moved to St. Petersburg. Retired, he ran 4 miles a day on a local island and swam 20 laps a day in the community pool. He kept that regimen until at least age 90.

Although he is not as active now, he enjoys watching boats from his balcony and a good home-cooked meal.
