'Fit Over 50' expo is Thursday

SEMINOLE - The fifth annual "Fit Over 50" Senior's Health and Wellness Expo, hosted by the city of Seminole Recreation Division, will be 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex, 9100 113th St. N.
The event will focus on the health and wellness of Pinellas County seniors and feature health and wellness seminars, community entertainment, a healthy snack area, a vendor expo, hands-on fitness/wellness demonstrations, giveaways, raffles, and the first Seminole Health Walk.
Many senior friendly businesses will be on hand to discuss their products. The health walk will begin at 9 a.m. on the recreation complex soccer fields. Participants should wear athletic shoes and comfortable clothes.
Light refreshments will be provided. The entire event is free and open to the public. Call Steve Malla at 391-8345.

Seminole residents are invited to a Pinellas Trails Inc. work meeting at 6:30 p.m. today at the New Largo Library, 120 Central Park Drive. Meetings are open to any Pinellas County resident interested in serving on the Pinellas Trail Board, one of its committees or helping out at any of its events.
The committees include: events, amenities, fundraising, communications/marketing/public relations, and Neighborhood Pride in Trail. Call Bert Valery at 517-8888.
In a related event, the city of Seminole and the Seminole Recreation Division will join a Pinellas Trail walk celebrating health and physical activity Feb. 2. Seminole residents can join the walk at 9:30 a.m. at Blossom Lake Park.
Mayor Dottie Reeder will read a proclamation at Seminole City Park naming Feb. 2 "Step Up Florida Day" for the city. The trail walk will then continue to Taylor Park and on to Coachman Park in Clearwater. This event, which starts at Tyrone Mall, is expected to attract up to 40 to 60 walkers who will escort the Step Up Florida Flag. Call 391-8345.

Babies are still needed for the ninth annual Diaper Derby on Feb. 4 at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N. Judging will be held in four categories for three age groups.
Categories include cutest smile, perkiest personality, chubbiest cheeks and parent look-alike. The cost is $5 per person, and babies will compete for ribbons, trophies and prizes.
Here is the contest schedule: babies between 6 and 11 months, 9 to 10 a.m.; 12 to 17 months, 10 to 11 a.m.; and 18 to 24 months, 11 a.m. to noon. For reservations or more information, call 391-8345.

The Seminole Community Library will hold a family movie, Snow Day, at 2 p.m. Saturday. The classic movie matinee at 2 p.m. Thursday will feature Brannigan.
The February family movie schedule includes: Feb. 4, Pippi Longstocking; Feb. 11, Ice Princess; Feb. 18, Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase; and Feb. 25, Black Beauty.
Next month's classic movies include: Feb. 2, The Courtship of Eddie's Father; Feb. 9, Ruthless People; Feb. 16, Protocol; and Feb. 23, Send Me No Flowers. Call 394-6905.

A series of classes on the basic skills of blacksmithing will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays on Feb. 4, 11 and 18 at the Pinellas County Historical Society, 11909 125th St. N.
The class will be led by Ken Straight, Heritage Village's volunteer blacksmith, who will show students beginning blacksmithing techniques. Topics include blacksmithing safety, lighting and maintaining an efficient coal fire, working the bellows, heating and shaping the metal, and designing an ornamental piece.

The Seminole recreation department is sponsoring a trip to Bodies, the Exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa on Feb. 9. The cost is $39 per person (recreation card required). Participants will leave at 9 a.m. and return by 3 p.m. The trip includes lunch at a local restaurant and a possible stop at International Plaza. Call Dan at 391-8345.

The Chuck Wagon Gang will perform at the Seminole High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m., Feb. 11 as a fundraiser for the Seminole Chamber of Commerce.

The Seminole Community Library will hold a Sunday Musicale at 3 p.m. Feb. 12, featuring accordionist Andrei Cheine.
Cheine is a master of all types of European music on the accordion, with a diverse repertoire from Russia, Italy, Germany and more.
