SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Georgetown couldn't top its thrilling upset win over then-No. 1 Duke on Saturday. It came close, though.
The 21st-ranked Hoyas squandered a 15-point first-half lead. They survived a bonehead foul that allowed Notre Dame to force overtime with a four-point play. They then endured a near winning basket by Chris Quinn at the end of the first overtime before finally beating the Irish 85-82 in double overtime Tuesday night.
"To come away with a double-overtime win on the road in a place we had not won in quite some time, regardless of what happened Saturday, was extremely important," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said.
Darrel Owens and Roy Hibbert scored 18 each for the Hoyas (13-4, 4-2 Big East), who seemed to have the game won in regulation. But Brandon Bowman fouled Colin Falls as he hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left, and Falls completed the four-point play to tie the score at 69.
ST. JOHN'S: Sophomore forward Dexter Gray has withdrawn from the school and plans to transfer, coach Norm Roberts said.
UVA 71, MIAMI 51: Sean Singletary scored 29 and took control when teammate J.R. Reynolds went down with a frightening injury in the second half, leading the host Cavaliers (10-6, 4-2) to its third straight win. Reynolds hit the floor hard on a driving basket with 15:43 left. His condition was unknown.
BC BUS KILLS CYCLIST: A charter bus carrying the Boston College team struck a bicycle in Chapel Hill, N.C., killing the rider, city police said. The name of the bicyclist was not released because the victim's family had not been notified.
KENTUCKY 71, AUBURN 62: Joe Crawford had 23 points and nine rebounds, and the visiting Wildcats coasted to their third straight win. Kentucky (13-6, 3-2) led by as many as 18 late in the game.
VOLS FINED: The University of Tennessee will be assessed a $5,000 fine for allowing fans to run onto the floor at Thompson-Boling arena after the Vols' 80-76 win over then-No. 2 Florida on Saturday night, the SEC announced.
The league's access to competition area policy, approved by all 12 schools in 2004, states that "access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly-credentialed individuals." "This policy is designed to create a safe environment for everyone who participates and attends our athletic contests," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement. "I understand the exuberance of the moment but the security and protection of our student-athletes, coaches, officials and fans is our primary concern."
