Refuge staff find lower number of manatees

By Times Staff Writer
Published January 26, 2006

Manatee numbers in area waters dropped off recently, according to an aerial survey conducted Monday by the staff of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge.

Just 144 animals were spotted in area rivers and canals; that's half the number seen just a few weeks ago. Monday's count turned up: 75 manatees in Kings Bay including 10 calves; four in the Crystal River including one calf; 24 in the Salt River including one calf; 19 in the Progress Energy discharge canal including one calf; 14 in the Homosassa Blue Waters including one calf; and eight in the lower Homosassa River including one calf. Manatees gather in warm springs each winter to escape the lowering temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico.
