Rep. Bob Henriquez files to run for City Council

By Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - Ending months of speculation, Democratic State Rep. Bob Henriquez on Wednesday formally filed papers to run for the Tampa City Council in March 2007.

Henriquez, known as "Coach," returned to Tampa Catholic High School in December 2004 to lead the football program and an effort to build a new stadium and related sporting facilities there. Those efforts are ongoing.

He had confirmed previously that he was also considering whether to run for a Hillsborough County Commission seat.

"I took my time obviously and tried to figure out the best avenue for me to take," Henriquez said. "I just felt like, to fulfill my commitment there (Tampa Catholic), it would have been impossible to balance that with a campaign for the County Commission."

Henriquez, whose House district takes in West Tampa, must leave his current office due to term limits. He filed papers to run for the District 6 seat on the City Council now held by Mary Alvarez, who has decided not to run again.
