Chain-reaction wreck kills 2

ST. PETERSBURG - Two people died Wednesday evening in a hit-and-run crash at 22nd Avenue S and 21st Street.

This afternoon the victims were identified as Sarah Bellamy, 22, of 2025 17th Str. S, and Larry Whitfield, 51, 232 20th Ave. S.

A car driving erratically on 22nd Avenue S about 7:20 p.m. struck the back of another car, which spun into oncoming traffic and hit a third vehicle.

Bellamy and Whitfield, the drivers of the second and third vehicles, died, police said. The driver of the car that caused the crash left the scene.

Police described the vehicle that fled as a full size sedan with a square, boxy front end. The car sustained heavy damage on the front but was still drivable, police said. Detectives described the color as "Chrome Illusion," which means it can look gray, green or blue, depending on the angle and lighting. The car should have front-end damage.

Anyone with information is asked to call St. Petersburg police at (727) 892-5000.
