An armed man reportedly involved in a domestic argument was seen in the area of Azalea Middle School in west St. Petersburg.

Azalea Middle School in west St. Petersburg was locked down briefly this afternoon as police searched for a man said to be carrying several firearms.

After a domestic dispute between a man and his mother at a residence on 23rd Ave. N, the man placed several firearms in a brown bag and walked away from the residence, police said. The mother called police, who notified school officials.

Officials at the school at 7855 22nd Ave N made a decision to secure the campus as a precautionary measure while police officers search the neighborhood for the man. People were not allowed to leave or enter the school between 2 and 3:30 p.m. A Pinellas Sheriff's Office helicopter was assisting the search.

The man is described as a white male, 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a medium build and scruffy appearance, wearing T-shirt and jeans. Police say the man became upset and fired a shotgun at the door of his home on one occasion last year.
