Top five movies and upcoming releases

A look at what's happening in the theaters

By STEVE PERSALL
Published January 26, 2006

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. Match Point - Remember when it wasn't surprising if Woody Allen made the best movie of the year? This homage to Alfred Hitchcock ends the slump.

2. Brokeback Mountain - Tough cowboys also need love, even from other tough cowboys. One of 2005's best films, winner of four Golden Globes and a leading contender for Academy Awards.

3. Capote - Philip Seymour Hoffman picked up a Golden Globe playing author Truman Capote as he researches and writes In Cold Blood.

4. The Matador - Pierce Brosnan breaks free of his James Bond image with a woozy, decadent portrayal of a hit man who has lost his edge.

5. Transamerica - Felicity Huffman's Golden Globe-winning performance as a preoperative transsexual is a solid Oscar contender in an otherwise ordinary road movie.
