Notebook: Black history celebration event to focus on health

CHANNEL DISTRICT - The city of Tampa Black History Committee presents the 18th annual African-American Celebration of Black History with a kickoff event Feb. 3 at the Tampa Convention Center.
This year's program is Health Awareness: Your Life Depends On It. Dr. Sydel Barnes-LeGrande of Operation Med-Care and Your Place Medical will give the keynote address. The event begins at 11 a.m. in the convention center's Ballroom D.
The celebration will be broadcast live on city of Tampa Television Channel 15 and will be replayed on the station throughout February.
University of Tampa resumes writers program
DOWNTOWN - The University of Tampa resumes its Writers at the University series with readings this winter and spring by six authors.
Fiction writer Edwidge Danticat kicks off the series with a reading at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Falk Theater.
Fiction writer Pam Houston will read on Feb. 16 followed by poets Reginald Shepherd on March 16, Gary Short on March 28, and Jane Ellen Glasser and Joshua Poteat on April 13.
Readings beginning in February will be held in Plant Hall's music room and will start at 8 p.m. Admission is free. For information, call 253-6216.
Gardener to discuss how to multiply plants
PALMA CEIA PARK - Master Gardener Martha Hall discusses how to divide and multiply your own plants at the Moonlight Garden Circle's February program Tuesday at the Tampa Garden Club.
The free event is open to new members. The program begins at 7 p.m. at 2629 Bayshore Blvd. Call 251-5059.
Applicants sought for design awards
DOWNTOWN - The Hillsborough County Planning Commission is seeking applications for this year's community design awards program.
The award recognizes excellence in planning, landscape architecture, environmental sensitivity, and architectural design in building and development projects or programs in the county.
Last year's winners included the restoration and historic preservation of the Academy Prep Center of Tampa, which received the Jan Abell Award.
Entry forms can be found at www.theplanningcommission.org or at the Planning Commission offices, 601 E Kennedy Blvd.
The deadline for entries is 4 p.m. Feb. 16. Awards will be presented at the Awards Dinner April 6 at the Airport Marriott. For information, call 272-5940.
