Inmate found dead in cell

It is the third death at the Hernando County Jail since November.

An inmate at the Hernando County Jail was found hanging in his cell early Friday. It was the third death at the facility since November.

The man was discovered about 6:30 a.m. Police are withholding his identity until they notify the next of kin.

"We're shocked," said Ken Bouldin, executive vice president of Corrections Corp. of America, which runs the jail. Bouldin was in Hernando to address complaints about two recent suicides at the jail, which currently houses about 550 inmates.

On Nov. 2, Daniel Ray Warren, 39, hanged himself with a bed sheet in his cell a few hours after having teeth knocked out during a fight with other inmates. Then, on Jan. 5, Geoffrey M. Conley, 21, hanged himself; he had been jailed since July. Jail officials initially said officers had been checking on Conley every 30 minutes; but recently the Sheriff's Office determined that officers had failed to check on Conley for more than two hours.
