NEW PORT RICHEY - Newsome outplayed River Ridge across the board in a 5-0 win. The Wolves were led by Anna Cate, who was all over the field and finished with a goal and two assists.
"We played well," Newsome coach Kathy Dodd said. "I thought the game played a little more even (than the score indicated).
"We just found a way to finish, and our defense didn't let them in. I think we attacked their weakness, which is their defense."
After an uneventful first 10 minutes, Newsome first struck with 29:04 left in the first half. From just inside midfield, Megan Dodd sent a feed to Megan Foley on the run. Royal Knight keeper Marrisa Moe came out of the box to try and beat Foley to the ball, but she couldn't get there in time. Foley gathered the ball, sidestepped Moe and shot into an open net for a 1-0 lead.
After a corner kick just more than three minutes later, Newsome's Tara McCluskey sent a header toward the net. The ball was misplayed by Moe, and a River Ridge defender attempted to clear the ball out of the box. The ball went directly to Newsome's Angela Murphy, who put it into the left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead with 25:55 left in the half.
McCluskey, Cate and Casey Feeney added goals in the second half.
"We got out-quicked," Royal Knights coach Skip Glover said. "But they're still my girls, and I'm proud of them."
