Parents sue over school bus crash

The lawsuit says that the boy, a bus passenger, was permanently injured.

HOMOSASSA - The family of a Homosassa boy has filed suit against a school bus driver and the Citrus County School Board, claiming the boy suffered serious injuries in a 2002 bus accident, according to court documents.

Greg and Sharon Vanaman filed the suit Thursday afternoon on behalf of their son, Matthew. The Vanamans say that at about 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 28, 2002, Matthew was a passenger on a bus driven by Mack Timothy Wright.

The Vanamans say Wright was driving north on Plaintain Point in Homosassa when the bus ran off the road and drove into a shallow culvert. The bus flew into the air, and Wright lost control of the bus, sending it into a nearby fence, the Vanamans say. During the collision, Matthew was bounced from his seat, refracturing his left femur, which was held in place by titanium rods.

Since the accident, Matthew has had additional surgeries, physical therapy and has a significant permanent injury, according to the documents.
