  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Forward thinking

An entirely subjective look at the week ahead

ADIOS TO THE METROPLEX

The fourth annual Tampa International Film Festival launches nine days of movies from around the globe at 7 p.m. Friday at Sunrise Cinemas in Tampa. The 18 featured films range from The Beauty Academy of Kabul, about a team of American women starting a school of cosmetology in the Afghan capital after the fall of the Taliban, to Bombon el Perro, an Argentine comedy about a mechanic whose life is transformed by an aristocratic dog. For the festival schedule, go to www.tampafilmfest.com

SCHADENFREUDE SPECIAL

And speaking of movies, the Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday. Expect plenty of carefully rehearsed expressions of humble surprise. But the really fun nominations come out today, when contenders for the Golden Raspberries are named. It's a bountiful year for bad movies The Dukes of Hazzard! Aeon Flux! Eeek! and worse performances (Tara Reid as a brilliant archaeologist in Alone in the Dark! Snort!). To revel in the list of not-so-proud nominees, go to www.razzies.com

POLITICAL THEATER

And speaking of performances, President Bush makes his fifth State of the Union address Tuesday night at 9. Topics he may discuss: new Supreme Court justices, tax-free health savings accounts, immigration reform, Iraqi elections. Topic he is sure to discuss: terrorism. Topics he is highly unlikely to breathe a word about: Medicare Part D, Scooter Libby, Jack Abramoff, Michael Brown, and the White House's urgent request to Congress to raise the $8.2-trillion debt limit before federal spending smacks into it in February.

MAJOR LEAGUE BIRTHDAYS

Sports fans may be focused on football, but it's a big birthday week for Baseball Hall of Fame members. On Tuesday, Ernie Banks turns 75, and Nolan Ryan is 59. Hank Aaron will be 72 on Sunday.
