BRANDON - The 55-year-old man shot Sunday night during a robbery attempt at his home in the Heather Lakes subdivision has been identified as William G. Whiteman.

Hillsborough Sheriff's detectives released his name Monday, as they continued to search for a young man and woman suspected in the crime.

Whiteman was sitting at a desk in his garage at 1727 Westerly Drive about 9:45 p.m. when two people in masks approached him and demanded money, according to investigators.

Whiteman told them he didn't have any money, and he walked around the desk toward the suspects. The male suspect fired several shots from a handgun, striking Whiteman. The duo fled on foot, and Whiteman was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Late Sunday, deputies searched the area with dogs and helicopters, but did not find the suspects. The suspects were described as a black man in his early 20s, 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds, wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and a ski mask; and a black female, also in her early 20s, 5-foot-4 and 120 pounds, wearing a white floral-print shirt, pants and a mask.
