Daily fishing report
By LARRY HOFFMAN
Published January 30, 2006
The winds should die down this week and allow for trips to deeper water, where good catches of grouper and snapper are occurring.
Structure is the key to good bottom fishing. The pipeline that runs from Tampa Bay to Louisiana is an excellent area. Along it are mitigation areas with car-sized boulders that hold good numbers of grouper and snapper. Many of the deeper mitigation spots also hold good numbers of amberjacks - some up to 30 pounds. Seasoned bottom fishermen know not to fish out a spot, so we usually take a few grouper and move on. Follow this rule and you will be rewarded each time you return.
The standard baits apply: cut frozen sardines and squid, and live pinfish are all the bait you need in the gulf this time of year. If the bite is slow, downsize your tackle to 30-pound class gear. Fluorocarbon leaders outcatch all leaders.
