Babies will compete in cutsie categories

SEMINOLE - The ninth annual Diaper Derby will be held Saturday at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N. Judging will be held in four categories for three age groups. Categories include cutest smile, perkiest personality, chubbiest cheeks and parent lookalike. The cost is $5 per person, and babies will compete for ribbons, trophies and prizes. Here is the contest schedule: babies age 6 to 11 months, 9 to 10 a.m.; 12 to 17 months, 10 to 11 a.m.; and 18 to 24 months, 11 a.m. to noon. For reservations or information, call 391-8345.

Daddy/Daughter Date Night will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Seminole Recreation Center. The Cinderella's Ball will feature a catered dinner and dancing at Prince Charming's Castle (the recreation center auditorium), a DJ and photography. Substitute daddies are welcome. Tickets are $30 per couple and $15 for an additional daughter. Either the father or daughter must have a recreation card. Tickets must be purchased no later than Monday. The city of Seminole and the Seminole Recreation Division will join a Pinellas Trail walk celebrating health and physical activity Thursday. Seminole residents can join the walk at 9:30 a.m. at Blossom Lake Park. Mayor Dottie Reeder will read a proclamation at Seminole City Park naming Thursday "Step Up Florida Day" for Seminole. The trail walk will then continue to Taylor Park and on to Coachman Park in Clearwater. This event, which starts at Tyrone Mall, is expected to attract 40 to 60 walkers who will escort the Step Up Florida Flag. For information, call 391-8345.

The Evans Hall Bridal Show will be 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Chapel on the Hill, 12601 Park Blvd. The free show will offer an evening of shopping, tasting and finding everything in one location for a wedding or special event. Hundreds of dollars in door prizes will be awarded. Live entertainment with a disc jockey, free food sampling and an open cash bar will be available. Participants must be present to win. A series of classes on the basic skills of blacksmithing are being held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and on Feb. 11 and 18 at the Pinellas County Historical Society, 11909 125th St. N. The class will be led by Ken Straight, Heritage Village's volunteer blacksmith, who will show students beginning blacksmithing techniques. Topics include blacksmithing safety, lighting and maintaining an efficient coal fire, working the bellows, heating and shaping the metal, and designing an ornamental piece. The program cost is $100 for Historical Society members and $120 for nonmembers; paid registration is required. Classes are open to adults only. The Seminole recreation department is sponsoring a trip to "Bodies, the Exhibition" at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa on Feb. 9. The trip costs $39 per person (recreation card required).
