U.S. Supreme Court
Justice O'Connor leaves limelight

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the Supreme Court's first female justice and a key moderate swing vote on issues including assisted suicide, campaign finance law, the death penalty, affirmative action and abortion, quietly walked away on Tuesday.
With the Senate confirmation vote on her replacement, Samuel Alito, O'Connor's resignation became official.
She had resigned in July, but agreed to remain until her successor was confirmed.
O'Connor's announcement signalled the first change on the court in a dozen years. President Bush first named John Roberts to replace her, but William Rehnquist died and the president swiftly tapped Roberts to be chief justice.
O'Connor begins teaching a class at the University of Arizona law school this week. A court spokeswoman would not say if O'Connor attended the swearing-in ceremony.
