  • For their own good
    Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

More coverage: Super Bowl XL

In honor of Super Bowl XL on Sunday, we looked around for bars that cater to Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks fans. The folks who like their Pittsburgh Pileup sandwich with the slaw and the french fries (in the sandwich, mind you) are all set. Seattle fans, not so much.

The pileup sandwich originated in the Iron City, and local hotspots such as Pittsburgh Pete's in Seminole and Rudy's in Largo have their own versions of this heart attack on a plate. Some other Pittsburgh-friendly spots:

AJ's Sports Bar & Grill: 7210 Ulmerton Road, Largo; (727) 539-6760.

Fatheads Sports Pub: 27419 State Road 54, Wesley Chapel; (813) 973-0446.

Galley Pizza: 3342 S West Shore Blvd., Tampa; (813) 832-5675.

O'Brien's Irish Pub: 11744 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa; (813) 961-4092.

Pittsburgh Pete's: 10801 Starkey Road, Seminole; (727) 397-4900.

Rudy's: 11100 66th St. N, Largo; (727) 546-2616.

Two Buks: 1915 N Hercules Ave., Clearwater; (727) 442-0812.

Spare Time Sports Bar & Eatery: 3544 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill; (352) 684-7998.

* * *

Seattle fans aren't quite as lucky. Since Seattle couldn't get much farther from here on the continental United States, the pickings are slim.

We couldn't find a bar in these parts that pledges Seahawks' loyalty. So try a Seattle beer during the game. All that rain makes tasty hops. And considering the Seahawks have beloved ex-Buc Joe Jurevicius on their team, it's worth a cheer.

Try Pyramid Brewing Co.'s ales and lagers, especially the India Pale Ale. The gold medal-winning Hefe Weizen (with a slice of lemon) is great for a hot day in February that only a Floridian can appreciate.

Redhook has grown too big to be called a microbrew anymore, but its ESB (which stands for Extra Special Bitters) is the signature brew, with its amber color and toasted malt flavor. Its India Pale Ale, originally named "Ballard Bitter" in honor of the Seattle neighborhood where Redhook opened its first brewery, is worth a sip.
