February is Black History Month, and the University of South Florida has quite a roster of events planned to celebrate it. Here are a few of the highlights:

Saturday: The National Pan-Hellenic council will sponsor the NPHC step show, featuring Greek organizations displaying their footwork. The show will be in the special events center at 7 p.m.

Monday: The USF lecture series will present author and lecturer Keith Boykin, who will speak on the topic of the black gay in America, 7 p.m. in the special events center.

Tuesday: Alpha Kappa Alpha will present Roots, a workshop exploring the hairstyles of minority women, 7-9 p.m. in Room 271 of the Marshall Center.

Wednesday: There will be an NAACP Youth Leadership Summit, which will focus on leadership training. The conference will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Marshall Center Ballroom.

Also on Wednesday, SISTUHS Inc. will present the SISTUHSpot, a coffeehouse-style event that will feature a wide array of black poetry, 7 p.m. in the Marshall Center, Room 271.

Thursday: The black student union will present Through Our Eyes: A Look Back, which will feature former and current students and faculty speaking about their experiences at USF, 6 p.m. in the Marshall Center's Tampa room.

Feb. 10: The African Students Association and Africana Studies Club will celebrate Nelson Mandela's 1990 prison release, 7 p.m. at Martin Luther King Plaza.

Also on Feb. 10, a book discussion with author Brandon Massey, about his book Within the Shadows, is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Books for Thought, a bookstore at 10910 56th St. N.

Feb 10 is also African Garb Day, when the community is invited to dress in African clothing.

Feb. 14: The USF chapter of the NAACP will hold a celebration of the organization's founding, 6 to 8 p.m. in the Marshall Center Ballroom.

Feb. 20: The University Lecture Series will host filmmaker Mira Nair, who will lecture on the topic Between Two Worlds, 7 p.m. at the Sun Dome Corrall.

Feb. 22: The Koinonia Covenant Campus Ministry and the USF Black Alumni Society will host the Steps to Success workshop, which will feature networking with corporations and alumni, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Sam and Martha Gibbons Alumni Center of Traditions Hall.

Feb. 24: The USF Library and the Institute on Black Life will host "An Evening with Norman Jones II," a presentation on his father, Norman E. Jones, a civil rights-era journalist. The presentation will be 2 p.m. in the Grace Allen Room of the Tampa Campus Library.

There will also be a presentation of African and Haitian culture called Tambou Lakay, which will feature poetry, presentations, dance, food, art and clothing, sponsored by the Club Creole and African Student Association, 8 to 10 p.m. in Cooper Hall, room 103.

Feb. 26: There will be a leadership luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. in the Marshall Center Ballroom.

Here are some other events occurring in the North of Tampa area:

LUTZ CELEBRATION: Break Away Moments will present "Wine, Cheese and Reggae Please," 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Cheval Golf and Country Club, 4142 Cheval Blvd. There will be music by the Mellow Vibes steel drum band, including wine, cheese, fruit, tasty Jamaican delicacies and hors d'oeuvres. Door prizes will include a basket of native island products, a bottle of Jamaican rum cream, a bottle of Jamaican coffee liqueur and a reggae CD. Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. ART SHOW: The North of Tampa Art League is holding its second show, "The Art of Love," through Feb. 15. A portion of the proceeds from the show will go to the University Area Community Development Project for use in the art program. The gallery is at 16035 W Tampa Palms Blvd. Call (813) 977-4841.

MOSI FOR KIDS: Animal Grossology, the new exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, 4801 E Fowler Ave, is open. Find out why the dung beetle likes dung and how slug and snail slime might be used in medical treatments. The exhibit is based on the popular Grossology series of books by Sylvia Branzei. Admission is free with general admission. Call (813) 987-6100.

WINE FESTIVAL: Come to Florida Estates Winery's wine festival to find the perfect bottle for Valentine's Day.

Come for the wine, but stay for the variety of foods, sandwiches, plants, arts and crafts, and, of course, the samples. The festival will last from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the winery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (813) 996-2113.
