Shopping center coming to Van Dyke sounds appetizing

A Village Inn will arrive this fall. Lee Roy Selmon's, a Chipotle and other restaurants might.

LUTZ - A shopping center planned for N Dale Mabry Highway and Van Dyke Road is emerging as a foodie's delight.

For starters, a Village Inn soon will be built next to the Walgreens there. The restaurant is tentatively scheduled to open in October, a spokeswoman for the chain said.

One of the first restaurants to join the negotiations at the shopping center was Lee Roy Selmon's, a little brother to Outback Steakhouse and Carrabba's in the Tampa restaurant chain. Selmon's isn't signed but remains in the mix, said Nathan Black, project manager for Central Development Enterprises, the Tampa developer.

A slew of smaller restaurants are negotiating for space, Black said. They include Chipotle Mexican Grill, Quiznos Sub, Papa John's pizza, an ice cream shop, a Latin cafe and a second Mexican restaurant.

"It's always been a hot spot, but the heat stays on it," Black said.

The shopping center, Van Dyke Commons, has gone up in sections and is projected to open this fall. The Walgreens opened last year. Construction of a small office park at the southern end is well under way. Central Development Enterprises just broke ground on the main shopping center.

Like Walgreens, the Village Inn will occupy a free-standing space along the development's Dale Mabry frontage, immediately south of the Walgreens, Black said.

Village Inn recently opened another restaurant off State Road 54 and Collier Parkway in Land O'Lakes. This area's first Chipotles are near WestShore Plaza and Clearwater Mall. Both restaurant chains are based in Denver.

The Dale Mabry shopping center is expected to be anchored by Selmon's and a 40,000-square-foot LA Fitness club with an indoor balcony running track. Bank of America and AmSouth plan branch banks along Dale Mabry.

Black said CDE still is negotiating to fill the many smaller spaces in the 165,000-square-foot center, plus a fifth space along Dale Mabry.

Last year's news about the empty Hollywood 20 theater nearby also enhanced interest in Van Dyke Commons, Black said. Wisconsin's Kohl's Corp. plans to demolish the Hollywood 20 and build a Kohl's department store in its place.

"Kohl's seems to be a positive," Black said.
