Broken bone in leg knocks out potential Derby favorite

ARCADIA, Calif. - Stevie Wonderboy has a small fracture in his right front leg that will keep the Breeders' Cup Juvenile champion and Eclipse winner out of the Kentucky Derby.
Trainer DougO'Neill said the colt came out of a workout Monday with the injury and will have surgery "in a couple of days." He will then head to a farm in California for 90 days before resuming training.
Owned by hotel and television magnate Merv Griffin , Stevie Wonderboy finished second behind Brother Derek in his 3-year-old debut in the Jan.14 San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. He was considered one of the early favorites for the Derby on May6.
"We're all disappointed, and Merv was upset," O'Neill said. "But the important thing is that he'll be back."

Safin's sister wins
Defending champion Dinara Safina beat Anna Chakvetadze 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the Gaz de France in Paris. Safina, sister of two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin , had five service breaks but also double-faulted nine times. Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo had a bye.

Everything okay, Adu says
Issues between Freddy Adu and the MLS's D.C. United have been resolved. Adu, 16, entering his third season, was suspended for a playoff game after complaining about playing time. Monday, United's first preseason workout, Adu said he had a meeting with coach Peter Nowak to clear the air. "It came down to an issue of miscommunication between myself and Peter," Adu said. "Peter, when he was 15, he went pro. He was brought up in a different way than I'm being brought up. Everything's cool now. I trust the guy."
MORE MLS: FC Dallas signed Kenny Cooper , who was released by Manchester United last month. The forward, 21, joined United in 2003 but never played. He was loaned to England's Oldham Athletic and Portugal's Academica Coimbra before being let go.

BASEBALL: The Orioles' Daniel Cabrera allowed one run and two hits in five innings to lead the Dominican Republic's Licey Tigers past Mexico's Mazatlan 3-1 in the Caribbean Series in Maracay, Venezuela. The event features the winners of the winter leagues in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Mexico. The Tigers (4-1) and Venezuela's Caracas Lions (4-0) remain in the title hunt with defending champion Mazatlan (0-5) and Puerto Rico's Carolina (1-3) eliminated.
TAE KWON DO: Charles Smith , 21, of Fort Washington, Md., tested positive for marijuana and was suspended for three months. He was tested after a Jan.7 event and forfeited his second-place finish.
