Promoter says travel vouchers are useless

By KRIS HUNDLEY
Published February 9, 2006

A Tampa company has been sued by a North Carolina promoter for failing to honor an estimated $2-million worth of travel vouchers.

Image Products Inc. of Wilmington, N.C., said in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Tampa Wednesday that it bought more than 200,000 "Choose your own Trip" vouchers from Mini Vacations Inc. of Tampa to distribute to its client banks. The banks then used the vouchers, which offered a free cruise, hotel or resort stay, as an incentive for new customers.

Late last month, Image Products alleged it heard from two customers who said they had been told Mini Vacations was not honoring the vouchers. The promoter estimated more than 60,000 worthless vouchers are outstanding. Image Products claims Mini Vacations' president acknowledged the problem, saying it was unable to honor its obligations.

Neither Michael L. Burke, Mini Vacation's president, nor attorneys for Image Products could be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
