Council's health care perk getting review

By Times Staff Writer
Published February 9, 2006

ZEPHYRHILLS - Liz Geiger voted in 1995 to extend health insurance benefits to City Council members.

Monday, she will ask the board to reconsider at the next council meeting. Two council members and their families are covered by the city's group plan, in which the city pays 80 percent of premiums and employees pay 20 percent. The cost to cover council members Cathi Compton, Clyde Bracknell and their families totals more than $10,000 this year. Council members are paid $4,800 annually. Geiger said the disparity between those figures is reason to reconsider the policy. Council member Gina King brought the matter up several months ago. She said the public is not aware of the practice - indeed it's not reflected in the city budget or in any ordinance. King also has pointed out that while council members are entitled to insurance, some part-time city employees are not. The City Council meets at 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 5335 Eighth St.
