  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

LUTZ: High school students may soon have a new home in Lutz.

The Hillsborough County School District is asking county commissioners to approve a 2,500-student school on the northeast corner of Lutz-Lake Fern Road and the Suncoast Parkway, which will be adjacent to the existing McKitrick Elementary and Martinez Middle schools.

The School Board says the new school will relieve overcrowding at both Sickles and Gaither high schools and will enhance the overall community image of the Lutz area.

The site they have in mind for the school is part of the planned and already approved 300-home Keystone Colony Park development. If commissioners allow this zoning modification, the resulting proximity to the other two schools would allow all three to share library and recreation facilities. (Petition 06-0711)

CARROLLWOOD: Barclay Property Management LLC wants commissioners' approval for a planned development on Barclay Road. The development, called Barclay Square, would consist of up to 18 single-family houses on a 7-acre plot of land. They would not build more than three homes on an acre.

The land in question is bordered on the north by Boot Lake, on the south by Habana Park, and to the east and west by residential areas. (Petition 06-0697)

CARROLLWOOD: Accurate Builders and Engineers LLC wants to put up Lotus Palms, an 18-unit townhome development at Sligh and Havana avenues. If the board approves a planned development, the 1.5-acre plot will see 12 homes built per acre. The company estimates that the project will take one year after approval. (Petition 06-0710)

The following recommendation was made by Hillsborough County land use hearing office staff:

CARROLLWOOD: T-Mobile customers in Carrollwood may soon be getting better reception. The staff recommended approval for the company to build a support structure and a 120-foot antenna on a half-acre site at 2323 W Linebaugh Ave. If built, the tower will not be manned, and will have a maintenance building next to it. Maintenance crews will come approximately once every month. (Petition 06-0036)
