BOYS SOCCER
Gaither won its semifinal match, while Freedom and Wharton lost, leaving the Gaither Cowboys alone among north Hillsborough County teams seeking a berth in the state final four.
The Freedom Patriots ended their season and retired their first senior class, losing 3-1 to Class 5A runner-up from last year, George Jenkins High School. Brian Watson scored the only goal for Freedom on a penalty kick late in the second half. The Patriots maintained a constant attack in the second half, but their opponents' defense was too strong.
Auburndale (22-1) eliminated Wharton (14-3-3) with a 4-2 victory in a physical match marred with numerous yellow cards. Adam Keaton scored both goals for the Wildcats.
Gaither continued to win on the road and set up a regional finals match with Countryside on this past Friday night, after North of Tampa's press time, seeking a berth in the final four.
The Cowboys eliminated Melbourne Eau Gallie 3-1 to set up a regional final with the only team to defeat them this season.
Eddie Ababio, D.P. Piniella and Kory Kulby each scored for Gaither in its semifinal victory. Ryan Henriquez made two assists to help the offense.
The rematch with Countryside was the third time the two teams met this season. Gaither (23-1-2) won the regular-season match 1-0 and Countryside (25-4) edged out the Cowboys 1-0 in a penalty kick final after double overtime in the district champion finals.
Countryside hosted the regional final.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
In the regional quarterfinals, Freedom got back onto the winning track and Alonso lost to finish its season.
The Ravens (15-10) dropped a 57-37 game to Sarasota Riverview. Meranda Maley scored 10 points for Alonso.
Freedom (28-1) roared out of the regional quarters with a 67-45 win over Wesley Chapel (21-4).
The Patriots spread their scoring around pretty evenly to frustrate the Wildcats defense.
Sharing the scoring were Tandra Faulkner with 18 points, followed by Charkia Harvey 17 and Brianna Nelson 16.
Freedom is scheduled to host Lakeland Lake Gibson (20-8) this Tuesday for a regional semifinal match.
