1. Be 18 years old, have a high school diploma and take a 63-hour prelicensing course, usually over one week, costing about $300.

2. Apply to take the state exam, which includes providing fingerprints and paying a fee of $152.

3. Choose a test site, pay a second fee of $31.50 and earn a minimum score of 75 on the exam.
