Water pipeline routes are subject of meeting

By Times Staff

TAMPA - Tampa Bay Water is holding a public forum next week on potential pipeline routes for a water supply project.

The project, which is in the study phase, would withdraw an average of 13-million gallons of water a day from the Hillsborough River and Tampa Bypass Canal to augment the region's drinking water supply, replacing it downstream with highly treated reclaimed water from Tampa's sewage plant.

The general area being considered for the pipeline route includes the southernmost portion beginning at Tampa's Howard F. Curren Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant located at the Port of Tampa and continuing north to the Hillsborough River.

The public meeting is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Ragan Park Community Center, 1200 East Lake Ave. in Tampa. Project managers, engineers and environmental scientists will be available to answer questions.

Tampa Bay Water's board will consider the pipeline route this summer, with a vote on whether to pursue the project slated for 2008. If it's approved, the project will be built between 2009 to 2011.
