Best bets

A couple of Americans will be skating 1,000 meters for gold today, but on two different ovals, while Bode Miller joins the rest of the world's best skiers in the men's super G.
Apolo Anton Ohno, shut out of medal contention in the 1,500, will return to the short track today in the 1,000. Ohno won the silver in this event in Salt Lake City, sliding across the finish line after a collision in the final turn.
On the less frenetic standard oval, Shani Davis, the first black speed skater to compete for the U.S. team in any Olympics, will skate for gold in the 1,000. Davis is the world record holder in the event.
In the super G, which is a cross between the downhill and the giant slalom, medal-less Miller will have perhaps his best shot at gold. But he'll have to contend with teammate Daron Rahlves and Austrian stars Hermann Maier and Benjamin Raich.
During daytime coverage, the U.S. men's hockey team will face Slovakia live at 2:05 p.m. on NBC. Slovakia has 18 NHL players and looks like a medal contender.
