FORT LAUDERDALE - It took everything they had, but the Countryside Cougars finally fought off a determined Hialeah American squad Friday night at Lockhart Stadium to claim the Class 6A state title with a thrilling 2-1 victory.
Countryside midfielder Mike Favero scored what proved to be the winner five minutes into the second half. From there, keeper Jeff Attinella did the rest, making several diving stops down the stretch.
"(Attinella) brought us all the way through," Favero said.
The championship is Countryside's second. The first came in 1991.
Griffin Gilstrap scored the Cougars's other goal. It came just six minutes into the game.
Countryside finished 28-4. American, which went 24-3-4, outshot the Cougars 15-7.
"This was a great team win," Countryside coach Dave Sica said.
