Americans may not reach the medals podium today, but at the very least, NBC has a few big-name athletes and high-flying skiers on the schedule.
Speed skaters Chris Witty and Jennifer Rodriguez, gold and bronze medalists in the 1,000 meters in Salt Lake City, will race in that event today. Both are well respected but may be past their prime. Rodriguez was 11th in the 500 last week, and Witty finished 28th.
Skiers Lindsey Kildow and Julia Mancuso, both 21, may not yet have reached their prime, but they are expected to be in the medal hunt in the super-G. Mancuso was the bronze medalist at the 2005 world championships.
Much of NBC's prime time coverage will focus on the second of three nights of ice dancing. Americans Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto are a surprisingly low sixth entering the original dance segment. The network also will air freestyle skiing women's aerials, an event dominated by China and Australia.
Meanwhile, NBC will carry the U.S. men's hockey team's game against Sweden live at 10:30 a.m. before switching to Daytona 500 coverage.
