Gators stun defending softball champions

GAINESVILLE - Lindsey Cameron's two-out single in the seventh lifted Florida past Michigan 3-2 in the GRU Classic on Saturday. The single capped a three-run seventh and gave the Gators their first softball wins over a top-ranked team and defending national champion.
Alessandra Giampaolo's two-run double put the Wolverines, No.1 in the ESPN/USA poll, ahead in the sixth.
But Kim Waleszonia led off Florida's seventh by reaching on an error. Lindsay Norfleet walked, prompting Michigan to bring in reliever Lorilyn Wilson. Wilson struck out her first batter then walked pinch-hitter Lauren Roussell on a full count. A groundout by Lindsay Littlejohn made it 2-1. Then Cameron delivered the single on a full count.
The upset came after Florida lost its first game of the tournament 7-4 to No.21 DePaul. The Blue Demons scored six in the fifth to overcome a 2-0 deficit.
FSU: The Seminoles fell 4-2 to South Carolina but rebounded to beat Iowa State 9-1 and win the Seminole Classic. The Gamecocks scored two in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. Against the Cyclones, Yuruby Alicart's two-run homer made it 2-0 in the second and Michelle Snyder's two-run double capped a four-run third.
USF 11, TEMPLE 4: Carly Griffin's two-run double in the fifth put the host Bulls ahead to stay on Day 1 of the Wilson Invitational. Tied at 3 and with Tiffany Stewart on third and Christie Chapman on first, Griffin hit a two-out shot to right.
BARRY 1, TAMPA 0: Jackie Godwin's bases-loaded walk won it for the host Bucs. The Spartans' Niki Trowell did not allow a hit until Ashley Loose's leadoff double in the seventh. Two walks then loaded the bases.
Baseball
FLORIDA 4, MIAMI 1: Matt LaPorta hit the go-ahead homer in the eighth for the visiting Gators, ranked No.1 by Collegiate Baseball. Bryan Augenstein limited the No.18 Hurricanes to one run in seven innings. LaPorta's 41st homer passed Ben Harrison for second in school history. He trails Brad Wilkerson by 14.
FSU 9, UNC-ASHEVILLE 1: Tyler Chambliss allowed one hit and one walk and struck out eight for the host Seminoles. Jack Rye's two-run homer made it 4-0 in the third. Dennis Guinn's two-run homer in the sixth made it 6-0.
JACKSONVILLE 11, USF 6: The host Dolphins hit four homers. Justin Young and Mike McCallister hit three-run homers to help Jacksonville to a 6-2 lead. Brad Simmons' homer in the fourth made it 7-4. Up 7-6, Jacksonville scored three in the fifth, highlighted by Logan James' two-run single. Gordie Gronkowski's homer in the sixth made it 11-6.
TAMPA 20-9, ECKERD 4-6: Jose Jimenez led the Spartans in Clearwater. In Game 1, Tampa scored four in the first and seven in the second, highlighted by Jimenez's three-run triple. In Game 2, Jimenez's two-run homer in the fifth put Tampa ahead 8-6.
SWIMMING: FSU's women won their first ACC title in College Park, Md. Carrie Ellis won the 100 free and Georgia Holderness the 200 breast to help the Seminoles, who also won the 400 free relay, beat Virginia by 331/2 points. ... Ryan Lochte set an SEC record in winning the 200 butterfly in 1:42.39 and earned the most points among the men to lead Florida to a second-place finish in the conference meet in Knoxville, Tenn. The Gators finished 162 points behind Auburn. Florida's women, led by Vipa Bernhardt's win in the 200 breast, finished third, 336 behind Georgia and 355 behind Auburn.
MEN'S TENNIS: Florida, No.1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis rankings, fell to No.9 Duke 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Seattle. Greg Ouellette got the only win.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Florida, No.2 in the Intercollegiate Tennis rankings, beat No.3 Texas 7-0 for its 34th consecutive regular-season home win.
MEN'S GOLF: Florida led the 14-team Gator Invitational by 11 over Tulsa after two rounds. UF's Brett Stegmaier shot 5-under 65 in the morning and 69 in the afternoon. The final round is today.
