John Romano's Made for America article on the USA snowboarders Tuesday was factual, interesting and funny. As a wife and stay-at-home mom of three children (age 5 and under) it takes a lot from the Sports page to grab my attention. The Olympics helps, but Romano's writing, wit and the reality, in this case, was the winner. I can't remember the last time I was so entertained by a sports column.

I'll buy the book
I've been a fan of Gary Shelton's columns for many years. I frequently tell my husband (a non-sports fan) that the writing in the Sports section is the best in the newspaper, and I usually cite Shelton as an example. Wednesday I read him Give Him a Big Hug and he listened for the entire article. He said it was great.
I am a fan of many sports, including figure skating, which I've followed since Brian Boitano won the men's Olympic gold medal in 1988. Your article about Johnny Weir was terrific.
Has a book of your columns been published? If not, it should be.

Winning doesn't have to be demoralizing
Bob Putnam's article about lopsided girls basketball scores shows how clueless some coaches are. There are several ways a coach can avoid humiliating a weak opponent: not using a fullcourt press, not fastbreaking, making players pass the ball a few times before shooting and not taking shots closer than 12 to 15 feet from the basket.
Taking measures such as these requires discipline that can ultimately help a team when it faces a stronger opponent. It appears some high school coaches know nothing of sportsmanship and little more about basketball.
