Baby dies after being shaken, deputies say

LAKE WORTH - A 4-month-old boy died Sunday, a day after allegedly being shaken by his stepfather.

The infant, Elijah Llanos, was pronounced dead at a Loxahatchee hospital, Palm Beach County sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.

Pablo R. Cano-Lopez, 20, of Lake Worth faces a murder charge.

Irma Llanos, 18, Elijah's mother, had left the child and his 11/2-year-old sister with Lopez at the couple's Lake Worth apartment Saturday while she went to school, authorities said.

Lopez told investigators he shook Elijah four or five times when the baby continued crying after being fed around 10 a.m., according to an arrest affidavit.

"The defendant stated that he shook the victim because he was irritated and tired. ... He also stated that when he shook the victim, his head "went back and forth,"' the affidavit stated.

When the baby went limp and had blue lips later in the afternoon, Lopez went to a neighbor, who called 911 and attempted CPR on the infant, according to the affidavit.

Elijah had been hospitalized in critical condition with "cardiac arrest, intracranial hemorrhage, shaken baby syndrome," the affidavit stated.
