TAMPA - Saying they hope it represents a new era of cooperation, members of the Tampa Sports Authority accepted an agreement with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to share the costs of security during football games at Raymond James Stadium.
The Buccaneers agreed to help pay for increased security since Sept. 11 and into the future and split the expected costs for carrying out fan patdowns if the practice is ever upheld by the courts.
"There's been a tug of war over the last several months over this," said Hillsborough County Commissioner Jim Norman, who sits on the board. "I think this is where we need to be."
Sports Authority chairman Patrick Manteiga believes new leadership in Buccaneers management appeared to recognize the poor public relations of insisting taxpayers pick up the full tab.
The team and Sports Authority, which runs the stadium, have been haggling over the issue for months.
Sports Authority executives hope to have the agreement finalized for the board's March 20 meeting.
