Peace groups continue courthouse vigil

Voter drive graces Black History Month

INVERNESS - The Supervisor of Elections Office will conduct a voter registration drive in honor of Black History Month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday near the pavilion at Whispering Pines Park, 1700 Forest Ave., Inverness. Election office staff will register voters, take requests for absentee ballots, update signatures, and take name, address or party affiliation changes. Information will be available on the 2006 election cycle and ways to become involved in the election process. For information call Patrick Thomas at 341-6742.

Flotilla to provide safety checks for boats

CRYSTAL RIVER - Crystal River Flotilla 15-01 conducts free vessel safety checks from 8 a.m. to noon the last Saturday monthly at the county boat ramp on State Road 44 and the flotilla radio room facility, 3266 N Sailboat Ave. Safety checks are conducted on any size water craft to ensure the safety equipment is on board and working properly. Safety checks can be scheduled at any convenient time and location by calling vessel examination staff officer Dave Plant at 726-4758.

Felines await new friends at adopt-a-thon

CRYSTAL RIVER - Home At Last Pet Adoptions and Humanitarians of Florida will conduct a cat and kitten adopt-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, at Manchester House, 1149 Conant Ave.

Many exotic and domestic breeds will be represented. All have been spayed or neutered, are current on shots and have tested negative for feline leukemia and feline AIDS. All have been wormed, given flea control and been microchipped. Empty printer ink cartridges accepted for Cash for Crittersdonations.

Free mulch available at Central Landfill

The Citrus County Central Landfill has free mulch available. Customer self-loading is available during all hours of landfill operations. County staff will use machines to load open top trucks and trailers from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, 230 W Gulf to Lake Highway (obtain entrance ticket from the scale house). No appointment is required for staff-assisted loading. A tarp is required to cover the load.

Public invited to meeting of aging agency

GAINESVILLE - The Mid-Florida Area Agency on Aging board of directors will meet at 10 a.m. March 1 in its boardroom, 5700 SW 34th St., Suite 222 of the Florida Farm Bureau building. Learn Italian during free class at library

CITRUS SPRINGS - Professor Raoul Borgonetti, Beverly Hills resident and native of Florence, Italy, will teach a free Italian language class at 7 p.m. beginning March 2 at the Citrus Springs Library, 1826 W Country Club Blvd. Classes will meet Thursdays through the end of May. Coast Guard flotilla seeks newcomers

CRYSTAL RIVER - The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the volunteer civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard that assists active duty Coast Guard personnel in non-law enforcement programs. Members are trained to conduct vessel examinations, participate in safety patrols, inspect the maintenance aids to navigation and more.

The Crystal River Flotilla 15-01 meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Monday monthly at 148 NE Fifth St. The group welcomes new members. For information about Flotilla 15-01 or other area flotillas, call Beth Ronan at 794-4100.

Chow down at United Way's fundraiser

United Way of Citrus County will kick off its 2006/2007 fundraising campaign with an outdoor rain or shine Crab Claws and Cole Slaw Dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. March 11 in the natural environment of the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.

Enter through gate 3 near the bridge on Fishbowl Drive. Crab claws will be served hot or cold; spicy unpeeled shrimp will be served cold. Warm drawn butter and a hot spicy bistro sauce will be available on the buffet line.

Tickets, $50 per person, are available at the United Way office, 5399 W Gulf to Lake Highway, Lecanto, by calling the office at 527-8894, or through its Web site www.citrusunitedway.org Reservation deadline is March 8. Corporate sponsorship for a table of eight is available at $600 with recognition of support provided at the event. There are 200 tickets available.

Dropoff time set aside for chemicals

LECANTO - The county will conduct a household hazardous waste dropoff program from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 17 at the Central Landfill, 230 W State Road 44.

Homeowners may bring up to 50 pounds of the following chemicals for proper disposal, free of charge: pesticides/herbicides/insecticides, household cleaners, solvents/degreasers, pool chemicals, paint and paint-related products, aerosol cans, automotive cleaner/waxes and gasoline.

Homeowners may dispose of the following materials at the landfill, free of charge at all times: used motor oil and antifreeze (5-gallon limit on each per visit), fluorescent bulbs, lead acid and nickel-cadmium batteries.
