March 1 is the deadline to apply to the 2006-07 American Chemical Society Scholars Program, a financial support effort for underrepresented minority students in the chemical sciences.
African-American, Hispanic, Latino and American Indian recipients are eligible to receive up to $3,000 per year and awards are renewable.
High school seniors and college freshmen, sophomores and juniors in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, environmental science and related disciplines at two- and four-year colleges and universities may apply for scholarships.
The goal of the American Chemical Society Scholars Program is to diversify the chemical sciences, both in academe and the workforce, by helping underrepresented minority students obtain undergraduate degrees and to encourage them to advance in chemistry or a chemically related field.

St. Petersburg High School, 2501 Fifth Ave. N, will hold two sessions of a Summer Driver Education Camp. Session one will run from May 22 to June 8; session two will run from June 12 to June 29. Classes start at 7:30 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.

The deadline for submissions to the 2006 Kids Are Authors competition, sponsored by Scholastic Book Fairs, is March 15.
The national book writing contest is open to student writers in grades K-8, who work in teams of three or more to develop, write and illustrate an original book with the guidance of a teacher or educator as project coordinator.
Entries are judged on originality, content, overall appeal to children, quality of artwork, and compatibility of text and illustrations.
One grand prize winner will be selected in both the fiction and nonfiction categories, along with 25 honorable mention awards.

Great Explorations: The Children's Museum, 1925 Fourth St. N, St. Petersburg, invites all public and private preschool teachers to a free open house from 5 to 7 p.m. today.
Educators can visit with museum staff, experience exhibits and educational workshops, and learn how the museum can support their educational objectives. Museum staff will provide exhibit and workshop demonstrations, all of which support Florida Sunshine State Standards.

The Pinellas County School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the district administration building, 301 Fourth St. SW, Largo.
The public is invited to attend. Anyone wishing to speak on either agenda or nonagenda items can do so by filling out a form at or before the meeting.
Residents may speak about any item on the agenda not involving a hearing on employee discipline by registering five minutes before the item is introduced.
The meeting will be televised at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays for two weeks following the meeting date. All broadcasts are shown on WPDS-Ch. 14, which also appears on Knology Ch. 14 and Bright House Networks Ch. 14.
