Mayor's bodyguard, driver dies in hit-and-run

Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio was not with the driver when his car was hit after exiting I-75 at Gibsonton at around 1 p.m., today.

Juan Serrano, Tampa mayor Pam Iorio's bodyguard and personal driver, died this afternoon following a hit and run accident. Iorio was not with Serrano at the time of the accident, around 1 p.m..

Serrano was returning from an assignment and exited I-75 at Gibsonton when a car ran a red light and struck the Tampa Police detective's car. He was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where he died of his injuries, according to police spokesperson Joe Durkin.

One suspect is in custody and and the Hillsborough County Sheriff deputies are searching for a second one.
