Detective Juan A. Serrano died in a traffic accident Saturday, shortly after he left Mayor Pam Iorio at her home.

TAMPA - Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Detective Juan A. Serrano, the veteran Tampa police officer killed in a hit-and-run crash Saturday afternoon.

The church is located at 509 N Florida Ave. in downtown Tampa.

Chief of Police Stephen Hogue, Sgt. Chris Ugles, Mayor Pam Iorio and Serrano's brother, Hector Serrano, will speak at the funeral service.

The service is open to the public.

Serrano, 49, had been Mayor Pam Iorio's bodyguard since she took office three years ago. He spent Saturday morning with the mayor at the Gasparilla Distance Classic near downtown Tampa. He was on his way home when the driver of a Pontiac Grand Prix ran a red light and hit Serrano's city-issued Ford Taurus as Serrano exited Interstate 75 onto Gibsonton Drive.

Serrano died at Tampa General Hospital.
