The Pinellas school board's task got tougher with a recent state mandate requiring teacher bonuses.

LARGO - The news was not good as the Pinellas School Board kicked off its effort Tuesday to cut next year's budget.
The amount board members need to slash grew to $22-million, up from the previous estimate of $19.7-million. Most of the increase was due to the state's proposed mandate that every school district give bonuses to the top 10 percent of its teachers.
The 2 1/2-hour meeting grew tense as some board members said they needed more information before making the cuts, while others were ready to press ahead with the difficult task.
The cuts proposed by Superintendent Clayton Wilcox would eliminate jobs or change working conditions for hundreds of district employees. The board reached no hard decisions on the cuts and was forced to schedule two additional workshops, March 2 and March 7.
