Published March 2, 2006

CONCORD, N.H. - A Clearwater tax preparer who pleaded guilty to preparing 400 fraudulent tax returns during a four-year period has been sentenced to a year in federal prison.

Cornelius Owens, 71, formerly of Plaistow, N.H., admitted in U.S. District Court that each return reported exaggerated or fictitious tax deductions to the Internal Revenue Service.

Prosecutors said phony deductions on the returns cost the government $425,000.
