Notebook: Group needs help for cleanup

TAMPA - Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful needs volunteers and local sponsors to help with a countywide cleanup April 22.

The local event is part of the Great American Cleanup, a nationwide community improvement effort. Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful expects about 2,000 volunteers.

Check-in for begins at 8:30 a.m. at locations countywide. The cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to noon. To participate, call 960-5121.

Mayor, leaders to dedicate playground in East Ybor

EAST YBOR - Mayor Pam Iorio and members of the City Council will dedicate a new playground, 2202 N 26th Ave., at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The city park is within the East Ybor Historic District and has been in the works for a few years. It will have a basketball court, a picnic shelter, tables and a fence.

YMCA kicks off campaign to raise $1.8-million

TAMPA - The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA kicked off a fundraiser Thursday for outreach and scholarships to benefit the needy in the community.

The We Build People Campaign is an annual opportunity for YMCA members to meet new friends, develop leadership and volunteer skills and to demonstrate what the YMCA means to them and their families.

The campaign raised more than $1.5-million in 2005 to benefit 26,000 children and adults with YMCA programs and activities at little or no cost. This year's goal is $1.8-million. To contribute, call 275-9622, ext. 241.

Leadership board's event to guide girls on living

HYDE PARK NORTH - The Ophelia Project's Young Women's Leadership Board is hosting a Girl's Guide to Life event from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hyde Park United Methodist Church, 500 W Platt St.

The event, for girls in grades 5-7, will help participants learn and discuss how to thrive.

Girls will choose among three workshops, including "10 Ways to be a Super Role Model," "Navigating Life's Emotional Storms" and "Seeds for Success: How to Grow Your Future."

The cost is $15 and includes lunch. Registration is from 9:45 to 10 a.m. Adults are encouraged to attend a 45-minute discussion after the registration on girls' health and wellness. Call 224-9622, ext. 279.

Poetry open mike night set at Barnes & Noble

OAKFORD PARK - For those interested in the rhythm and rhyme of poetry, Poetry on the Edge hosts an open mike event at 7:30 p.m. today at Barnes & Noble, 213 N Dale Mabry Highway.

Participants are encouraged to pick three songs and interpret them as poems. Call 871-2228.

The Arts Council awards 10 locals $3,000 each

DOWNTOWN - The Arts Council of Hillsborough County recently awarded $30,000 to 10 local artists through the Individual Artist Grant program for their work on projects that will further their professional development.

Each artist received $3,000. They were selected from 20 applications based on the project's impact on the artist, artistic excellence, professional resume and training.

Funding for the program was provided by the Hillsborough County Commission.

Free program to teach about Florida wildflowers

FAIR OAKS/MANHATTAN MANOR - Learn about native Florida wildflowers at the Moonlight Garden Circle's March program at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Homeless Coalition awards first hero award

OLD SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - The Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County has awarded the first Homeless Hero Award to Jenine La Coe, program manager of homeless services for Mental Health Care Inc.

La Coe was selected for her dedication and hard work. La Coe manages several programs and services, including outreach, treatment, case management and housing assistance.

UT to add master's degree in marketing this fall

DOWNTOWN - The University of Tampa will introduce a master of science degree in marketing this fall at the John H. Sykes College of Business.

Program director Erika Matulich said the school developed the new program because the marketplace is rapidly changing and the competitive nature of companies is opening more doors for marketing.

Experienced professionals in the field with doctorate degrees will teach the classes. The degree requires eight or nine courses. Students choose the rest of the 30-hour degree.
